It Started With a Fox

My photography, that is. My photography started with a little clay fox that my mom has on this shelf full of trinkets by the kitchen. It must have been, oh I don’t know, 15 years ago. My brother Caleb had an art class in elementary school that gave all the students a camera for a weekend and the assignment was to take a full roll of pictures. Easy enough. And I was at that age where I thought that literally everything my brothers did was THE coolest thing you could possibly do. You know, the age where you gladly accept a suspicious looking piece of candy from them, only to find out due to their uncontained laughter that the dog had been chewing on it moments earlier. (Yeah. Gross.) Or  when they scream and yell at the TV while the Bulls play against the Jazz in the playoffs, you yell and scream, too, even if you’re not sure what you’re screaming for. (But cheering for Michael Jordan, of course.) Or when they head out to play night games with all the neighborhood kids, you want to go too. And you get to because your mom makes them take you. (Sometimes it pays being the baby of the family.)

Anyway. I saw my brother taking pictures, and I wanted to do the same thing. But while he was just trying to finish an assignment, my eyes were opened up to a world of almost endless possibilities. I started looking through the small collection of magazines in my house (which consisted mostly of Better Homes and Gardens and a few National Geographics),  and my imagination started to run wild. I found my parents’ old Kodak camera, and decided to get to work. I was going to out-do my brother. Because you also want to prove yourself at that age. The only issue was that I had no idea what I was going to photograph…

That’s when I saw the fox. The small, fragile, clay fox that made my 8 year old brain overflow with ideas. I was going to take that fox outside and make it look as if it had pulled an Alice in Wonderland, like it was a tiny fox in giant world. I put it in the grass. I put it in a tree. I put in a bush. I even put it on a big rock and ran the hose over the rock to make it look like it was next to a small waterfall. (I guess you could call me an over-achiever.) I went through every scenario in our yard that my little brain could think of, until I had taken 24 frames. And I could not WAIT to take it to Walmart to be developed.

When I got the pictures back, though, I was more than a bit disappointed. They were nothing more than blobs of green and brown and gray, with one big orange blob in the middle. Of course, I had no idea that the camera I used had no macro capabilities whatsoever, and that every picture I had taken would turn out horribly blurry. Needless to say, Caleb won that round.

Fortunately, I’ve come quite a long way since then. But I was going through old pictures the other day and I came across my blurry fox disasters. It’s amazing what kind of memories and emotions a single photograph can bring back. I think that’s one of the reasons I am so passionate about what I do… That, and because now I could beat Caleb any day of the week ; )

Happy Weekend!

West Jordan Anytime: The Thompson Family

When Lisa messaged me about taking some family pictures for them, I was thrilled! They live in California, but were visiting for a bit during Christmas and we were able to squeeze in their session during the busyness of the holidays. Can I just say, this family is SO precious!! Mike and Lisa are absolutely fabulous together. And their kids are completely adorable.  Noah is a little stud, not to mention hilarious. I was constantly laughing at his witty remarks! And Amelia? She had me at the flower headband. We met on a brisky Sunday morning a few days before they left. Unfortunately, it was a little too chilly out, and Lisa and Mike didn’t want little Amelia in the cold for a long period of time. Fortunately, they were staying at the home of Lisa’s parents, and it had an abundance of windows. Which meant some lovely natural light. And I love me some natural light : ) Meet the Thompsons!

Such a beautiful family!

Amelia has some of the funniest expressions.

Case in point. Haha. I love this photo.

Noah did this on his own accord. He is such a sweet big brother!

I just lurrrved Amelia’s headband…

Like I said, stud.

Meet the parents : )

Santa brought Noah something shiny and red for Christmas that he was soooo excited about, we just had to get a few shots of it…

I love these next ones.

These too.

Once again, Noah got down by his sister without being asked and was super sweet to her…

Just too cute for words!

For the last little bit, we headed outside for a change of pace and got a few shots of just Mike and Lisa.

I adore how in love they are…

I’ll end on this family photo, because it makes me smile : )

Music Monday

Jake and I were having an intense discussion the other day. I say intense discussion because it wasn’t really an argument. But we definitely disagreed with each other. Maybe you could say dispute. Or Dissension. Discord? Anyways. I’m kinda positive that I’m right on this one.

In a nutshell, he thinks that dogs don’t smile. Dogs. Don’t. Smile. I KNOW!!!! Internet, sometimes I worry about him. I was sitting at the kitchen table and happened to spy Frisky on the ground watching me with a very happy face. I was all, Look, Frisky’s smiling at me! Jake looked down at at Frisky from across the room and informed me that he was panting, not smiling. Whaaaa? I’m pretty sure my dog smiles at me. He was grinning at me because we wuv each other so vewy much and he’s my wittle baby. (Yikes, I do actually talk to him like that…) We hashed it out for a bit, but ended up agreeing to disagree. Which is fine. But I secretly tell Frisky that I’m right, and he smiles happily at me in return : )

On a totally unrelated note, Pandora came up with this little number while I was editing recently, and it blew my mind. I fell in love. I’ve had it on repeat for a while now. I just don’t get sick of it. Hopefully some of you will enjoy it as much as I do! (Unfortunately, the official music video is locked so I couldn’t posit it, but you can check it out on YouTube here. I enjoy it.) It’s by Angus and Julia Stone, and it’s called Big Jet Plane.

And here is proof that Frisky smiles. (Also, please ignore the fact that he is in dire need of a bath and haircut.)

See!? Happy Monday : )

Happy Birthday, Jake

As I am typing, Jake is laying on the couch downstairs playing Fifa and digesting some delicious blueberry muffins. I thought he would be playing with the new remote control helicopter I got him for his birthday, but sadly, I must have picked the only faulty one in the store. We’ll have to go get a new one. His birthday has gone a little differently than I had hoped… I had these big plans. I was going to go all out and make today extra special. As special as possible. Complete balloons, streamers, breakfast in bed, those party whistles that uncurl when you blow them, and a clown named Dave. (Ok, maybe not the clown.) I mean, it’s Jake’s birthday!! The thing is, it’s not just his birthday. It’s the first of his birthdays that we’ll celebrate MARRIED. I wanted to make this his best birthday yet. One we’ll never forget.

We were going to start the celebrations yesterday with a day of skiing and dinner with a friend. But Jake woke up sick yesterday. Skiing turned into lounging on the couch together catching up on The Biggest Loser all morning (which I can’t complain about). And we did have a nice, mellow dinner. This morning, though, Jake woke up even sicker.

I felt awful, listening to him cough and knowing there was nothing I could do. I figured his birthday was pretty much shot. But when I asked him what he wanted for breakfast, he responded with an enthusiastic Blueberry muffins! Jake loves blueberry muffins. No, wait. Let me rephrase that. Jake LOVES blueberry muffins. And as I was mixing the batter this morning, I realized that, had we switched positions and I was sick on my birthday, I would be happy as a clam laying on the couch while Jake made me my favorite breakfast. Knowing that there is nothing on the agenda for the day except being together, well, that sounds like a perfect birthday to me.

Jake… even though your birthday isn’t quite turning out how I had planned, I still hope it’s one of your best birthday’s yet. Thanks for being the blueberry to my muffin, and for pushing me to be the best person I can be. I love you so much and I am so thankful that God has blessed me with another year in your life. Happy Birthday, Roo. You’ll always be my favorite.

Goshen Engagements: Emily + Andrew

In 8th grade, they held hands. Because they were dating. And when you date in 8th grade, that’s what you do. You hold hands. There might have even been a stolen kiss in the back of a school bus one sunny summer day. Their first kiss. And I would bet it was better than whatever field trip they were embarking on.

Soon after, though, Emily decided they were better off friends. Andrew disagreed, but if friendship was all he could have, he still wanted it. All through high school, they remained friends. Great friends. The kind of friend that that will drop everything in an instant if you need them, that can make you laugh until you cry, that will bring you chicken noodle soup when you’re sick. Because that’s what you do when you’re friends. You bring each other soup. And Andrew never gave up hope that they could be something more.

Until the end of their freshman college year, that is. After years of pursuing Emily, Andrew decided it was finally time to let her go. He explained that they needed to stop talking, so that his heart could heal. Emily agreed, but it was painful. Much more painful than she had anticipated. In fact, it was too painful. In that separation, she realized that Andrew was the one person she couldn’t live without. They dated again, holding hands and all. And in his own sweet way, Andrew proposed, so that they would never be separated ever again… Because that’s what you do when you’re in love. You spend rest of your lives together.

Emily and Andrew, I seriously could not be happier for the two of you!!! You are amazing people individually, but together, you are even better. If that’s possible. But somehow it is. Thank you for allowing me into your lives. I’m better because of the two of you : )

We started off in this amazing little church Emily found.

The light was perrrrfect.

Let’s be real. Emily, you are FIERCE!

They could not be more perfect for each other!

Roar.

I lurrrve the way Andrew looks at her. He just adores his fiance : )

You guys will have pretty babies! Just sayin ; )

We headed into the cold to fine some fun stops on Main Street in Goshen.

And we found an old bookstore!

Andrew, you might not like getting your picture taken, but you are definitely photogenic!

Lurrrve these!

We headed into a little coffee shop to warm up.

They laugh a lot. And it’s contagious : )

We headed out to one last spot before we lost all light. Emily had a vision for some pictures in a snow covered field. And fortunately, Indiana is full of them!

Swoon.

Gorgeous people.

I’ll end on this one…

Congrats again you guys!!

Firstly, what a beautiful story of their love. You really have a way with words, and this couple has the cutest story :). Secondly – I am seriously so impressed with your images. There’s something quirky about them that I really like. The composition of them, the feel of them, the way you use light, different locations – I really love it. Plus this couple is sooo good looking!! Keep up the amazing work!

The Thirty-Something Bride - January 9, 2011 - 1:13 pm
