It’s a Funny Thing

Jake lost his wedding ring a few months ago. In his defense, it was half a size too big. But one fateful night, he crawled into bed next to me, froze, and said into the dark, “Where’s my ring?” We stripped the sheets. We scavenged the floor. We searched on our hands and knees in the bathroom. It was nowhere to be found.

I wasn’t worried at first. Part of me thought it would randomly show up. Like one day I’d be vacuuming, I’d hear a clunk, and there it would be, stuck in the vacuum. But the days turned into weeks, and yes, weeks to months, and it never showed. As the reality of it started to sink in, I was just sad because he would never have his original ring again. The more time that went by, though, I realized that what bothered me most was that his hand was… well, naked, if you will. I didn’t like the fact that he was walking around unclaimed. That’s right, unclaimed. Because that ring says Back off, ladies. He’s mine! (In the nicest way possible, of course.) We ended up ordering another one, the correct size this time.

The new ring just came in a few days ago. Finally. It feels as though I have been holding my breath for the last couple months, and I can finally breath again. Like everything is right with the world now.

I’m probably being over dramatic. It wouldn’t be the first time. I think it’s because I just love him so much. And love? It’s a funny thing.

I’m glad you got a replacement ring. I can’t wait for Tony to wear his ring (he didn’t want an engagement ring for himself — he’s a little too traditional), and it would bother me if he lost it, too.

I worry about losing my ring all the time. My hands swell at night and shrink during the day, so while I’m up and around, my ring swings around quite a bit, but at night, my finger will swell so that it becomes uncomfortable. There have been times when I switch it to my other hand in my sleep. I’m always worried that one of these nights, I’m going to lose it.

@Sarah Swelling is definitely a pain! Getting it insured is not a bad idea : )

Free Wedding Photography Giveaway!

Yes, you read that correctly. Wedding photography that won’t cost you a penny! I know right?! I like to call it free.99 baby! (It rolls off the tongue nicely.) I am sooo excited to announce this sponsored contest with The Thirty-Something Bride wedding blog! Louise, the amazing woman behind The Thirty-Something Bride, started a blog to write about her wedding, and what began as journal for her own planning journey, has morphed into a fabulous wedding blog and resource for brides across America. Her honest, witty, and unabashed personality makes her blog pretty easy to fall in love with. (Yeah, I’m kinda head-over-heels.) She was actually the one to give me my very first feature, and I am still SO grateful for that.

But onto the good stuff! Louise and I have been collaborating for a while, and we’ve come up with a contest that pretty much takes the cake, in my opinion. (And I looove cake!) If you’re getting married in 2011 or 2012, you’ve got a chance to win free wedding photography from yours truly : ) How, you ask? In a nutshell, you just have to answer a few fun questions, and email your answers and wedding info to me and Louise. We’ll be picking our 4 favorites entries, and then it will be up to family, friends, and the internet to decide! Whichever couple gets the most votes will win : ) But all the juicy details are on Louise’s blog. So head over there and get crackin’!! I can’t wait to see everyone’s answers! Good luck : )

Friday Fun Facts

The other day I was reading through all the Friday Fun Facts on my old blog, and I literally laughed out loud. Because a lot of them have to do with food. Then I looked at my list for today, and realized that, still, a lot of them have to do with food. I’m not sure whether I should be proud or embarrassed. I’m pretty sure my dad would be proud. I’m going to go with slightly embarrassed. I’ll try not to bombard you with lots of food anymore. Then again, I’m not going to make any promises…

1. You know the holidays were good to you when your “big jeans” are no longer that big…

2. The most recent year that can be read the same upside down was 1961. That won’t happen again until 6009.

3. If you are a tea lover, you have GOT to try Coconut Chai Tea. It’s a little bit of heaven in your mouth. (That is also assuming that you like coconut.)

4. But if you swing more in the line of coffee, definitely get yourself a french press. Coffee never tasted so good in the morning. Plus, coffee makers are so last century.

5. Cows give more milk when they listen to music. Which totally makes sense. I mean, I’m waaay more productive when I’ve got music going.

6. If you tend to have a bit of road rage (it will forever boggle my mind how some people can drive UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT), listening to classical music can help. Debussy’s Clair De Lune is a personal favorite.

7. Tortillaland Uncooked Flour Tortillas are by far the best tortillas on the market. If you like making breakfast burritos, or fajitas, or if you just enjoy a nice flour tortilla, definitely buy yourself some of these. You won’t be disappointed.

8. The Sundance Film Festival comes to Park City every year, bringing lots of awesome movies, celebrities, and downright entertainment. But it also brings in tourists by the hundreds. So if you’re a local, or if you’re in town for the festival, be sure to give yourself a bunch of extra time for driving, because you won’t be getting anywhere in a hurry!

9. If you recently got engaged, you’re definitely going to want to check back here on Monday. Trust me. You won’t regret it. (In other words, there may or may not be a contest brewing…)

10. Skiing is better than snowboarding.

I probably just made some people audibly gasp, and quite possibly opened up a can of worms. But I’m totally kidding. I’ve actually never even been snowboarding. I’m sure it’s really great, too. I just couldn’t think of a better way to lead into my photos for the day. Haha. Jake and I went skiing yesterday and it was wonderful. I feel so blessed to live in a place that where I can ski regularly! I’m pretty sure I’ve been spoiled rotten, but I love the mountains, and I can’t see myself living anywhere else : )

The view from the top of McConkey’s chairlift at Park City Mountain Resort.

And yes, I made us do a totally cheesy tourist picture, complete with the camera reflection in our googles. It’s sophisticated.

Happy Weekend!

Emily - January 21, 2011 - 3:15 pm

Where did you learn that fact about cows and music! I think its cool and I do believe it! haha. And please, for Fine’s sake, keep bringing up a lot about food on your blog.

Sara B - January 21, 2011 - 4:36 pm

Did you get the photo that I sent you the other day? Cinnamon and sugar kettle corn drizzled with frosting (like on a cinnamon roll)? I thought of you making your “I love this food” noise.

Carissa - January 21, 2011 - 10:05 pm

@Emily Blogging about food is inevitable. I will always be a Fine. Haha.

@Sara Save me a piece of that corn!

Aunt Cheri - January 29, 2011 - 9:42 pm

Fine/Food comments–enough said!
Love you!

Old Bag Factory Wedding: Natalie + Brenden

“No, I’m not stressed anymore.” She spoke happily into her phone to a bridesmaid listening on the other end.

The morning had began with a few hiccups. And, as any bride would be, Natalie was feeling some unwanted pressure as the events of the day began to unfold. While her bridesmaids did their best to ease her anxiety, there was really only one person who could make it all go away. Only one person who could bring out the smile that brightens her whole face and lights up her eyes.

And Brenden did just that. From the moment their First Look began to the moment they left the reception hand in hand, Natalie’s worries evaporated into thin air, and she was nothing but smiles. They both were. That’s the kind of love Natalie and Brenden share. A blissful love. A radiant love. A love that says Let me help you carry your burdens and You’re not alone, you will never be alone.

Her smile beamed. “I’m not stressed at all.”

Natalie and Brenden, thank you SO much for allowing me to be a part of your day!! It was such an honor to document your love, but even moreso to be able to call you friends. I can’t wait to see what life has in store for you both! I know it will be nothing but great things : ) I wish you guys all the best!! Much love : )

I adored her birdcage veil and hairpiece!

Everyone got ready at the church.

After the final touches of make up, Natalie was ready to get into her gorgeous gown.

I love her maid of honor’s reaction to seeing Natalie in her dress!  -Which, btw, that’s my lovely college roommate, Sara : )

While Natalie was finishing up, Brenden and his groomsman were doing the same.

Brenden, you look quite sharp, if I do say so myself!

After they were both ready, we headed to the Old Bag Factory for their First Look.

LOVE.

You guys are a fabulous couple. Just putting that out there.

These ones crack me up.

We headed back inside to warm up.

Le sigh.

Yeah, go on wit your bad selves.

Then we headed back to the church for the ceremony.

Brenden’s face says it all.

When it was over, they didn’t walk down the aisle, they surprised everyone and danced to Down by Jay Sean!!

They left for the reception in a flurry of feathers : )

The decorations at the Old Bag Factory were fantastic.

After delicious food and toasting to their love, Natalie and Brenden danced together for the first time as husband and wife.

They way they look at each other? Yeah, lurrrve it.

Then it was time to get the party started!!!

Ok, I have to give these a little intro. This kid was breaking it DOWN. I mean, he had moves that would make Usher jealous!!

I’ll end on one of my favorites from the night.

Natalie - January 18, 2011 - 10:15 am

OH MY GOODNESS :) I seriously started crying… Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!

Kelly McIlhany - January 18, 2011 - 10:29 am

Carissa, these are awesome! They look like such a fun couple. :) Can I be nosey and ask… what is the lighting you have set up at the reception? Is it just one strobe? Looks great! Hope you are doing well!

Carissa - January 18, 2011 - 11:45 am

@Natalie xoxo

@Kelly You’re not being nosey! I have no secrets : ) For all the detail and dinner shots, I was just using ambient light. I was shooting at a high ISO and low aperture. But when the dancing started, they turned down the lights, and then I had my 430 EX speedlight on my camera, bouncing it off of the ceiling, and I had my 580 EX II on a light stand, powered by PocketWizards. Nothin’ too fancy : )

I Wanna Win!!!

Say that title like Jack Black does in Nacho Libre. So it’s more like I hwanna hwiiiiin!!! Anyone with me? No? I guess I just have a strange affinity for movies with really ridiculously stupid humor. Like when Jake and I went with some friends to see Napoleon Dynamite, and I was honestly the only one in the entire theater laughing… but let’s not go there. I digress.

I actually had a different post planned for today. However, that was before I came across Justin and Mary’s blog post about a Shoot Out at WPPI. They posted it 6 days ago, and how I missed it is beyond me. But I’m really glad I found it last night because I’m pretty sure today is the last day to enter!

Let me explain. Justin and Mary are a completely rockin’ husband and wife photography team who produce gorgeous, melt-in-your-mouth images, and I am a long time follower of their blog and their work. Not only are they amazing at what they do, they are also some of the most genuine, helpful, and giving people I’ve… well I was going to say met, but I’ve never actually met them. I guess I just feel like I have through their blog. But they are sooo willing to help out other photographers! They often blog what they call Pancake Sessions (hence the pancakes in my video- although I really do love pancakes), and I can honestly say that part of my photography comes from those open and honest bits of advice. They also travel around the US doing their Spread the Love seminars, which is on my Bucket List to attend. Mary even commented on one of my blog posts on my old blog a few months ago, and I might have had a mini heart attack. It was that exciting.

Ok, so, the point of this post. The Shoot Out. I’m  SO stoked to be going to WPPI this year!!! (For non-photographers, WPPI is a huge photography convention that happens every year in Vegas, and it’s a big week of learning, shooting, and partying it up with fellow photographers and friends!) It will be my first year and I know it’s going to be an incredible experience. But to make it even more incredible, Justin and Mary are giving 20 lucky photographers the chance to shoot and learn with them during WPPI. And, true to J&M form, they are holding a contest to see who those 20 photographers will be! (If you follow their blog, you also know that Mary looves a good contest lol.) So here I am, posting a rather embarrassing video of myself on my blog for a chance to spend a morning with Justin, Mary and 19 other photographers in just a few shorts weeks at Vegas. But if I win, it’s totally worth the embarrassment!

(Please note: this video was put together at 10pm last night… hence my sleepy, scattered brain, and the nasty yellow lighting. Also, this is why I prefer to stay behind the camera. Apparently I talk out of the side of my mouth??? Classy.)

Thanks so much for this opportunity Justin and Mary!!!! Regardless of whether or not I win, I truly appreciate your readiness to help others, because you’ve helped me more than you know : )

Also, for anyone else attending WPPI, mark your calendars for their platform talk, “How to be a Rainmaker,” on Thursday, February 24th at 9 am!!

**Edited to add: I WON!!!!!!! I’m going to be one of the 20 photographers!!!!!!!!!! I basically just peed my pants out of excitement. Totally worth the embarrassment. Thank you SO much J&M!!! I can’t WAIT to meet you guys!**

Emily - January 17, 2011 - 8:22 pm
