The Dog Days of Summer

Since it has finally started to warm up around here, the pups have been running around and laying outside a lot more. Which is great, for the most part. But I think the sun is getting to their heads a little bit. Yesterday Zuka asked me for a glass of iced lemonade and Kiva told me to put an umbrella in it.

Such divas, I tell you.

BUILD Workshop

It started with a tweet. Had I checked twitter 10 minutes later, I probably would have missed it. Totally one of those happened-to-be-there-at-the-right-time kind of things. Although, I don’t believe in chances. I believe that everything happens for a reason. So, I’m not sure I deserved it, but I thank God that I was blessed with such an opportunity.

When I happened to see Gabriel’s tweet about winning a free spot to their first ever BUILD Workshop, I knew I had to try. Gabriel and Carlie are not only incredible photographers (and incredible people), I’ve always admired how they seem to run the business side of things, too. Which is something that I’ve struggled with from the get go, simply because I am SO not business minded. I mean, helloooooo, I’m an artist. That means I’m entitled to be horrible at business, right? (I kid, in case you can’t tell.) Seriously though, it’s not something that comes naturally to me. But I knew that BUILD could change that, so I just had to try…

As you probably guessed, yes, they picked me. Little ole me! To say I was ridiculously stoked when I found out would be an understatement. I will forever be soooo grateful that they picked me!! BUILD did change me, and the way I look at my business. I can’t express enough just how encouraging, motivating, and especially educational the workshop was. I came away with a strong direction, more knowledge, and some new friends : ) It was an experience I won’t forget any time soon. If you’re a photographer just starting out in the wedding business, or even if you’ve been doing it for a while and you just need a fresh perspective and vision, this workshop is so worth it.

But enough of me blabbing away. Let’s get to some pictures, yeah?! Gabriel and Carlie arranged a styled shoot for us, and it was FABULOUS. I’m still drooling over gorgeous tablescape and the adorable smiles of our models, Evelyn and Jesus…

We started off walking the grounds of the clubhouse where the workshop was held, and found this tunnel with pretty light.

Gabriel showed us how he works his magic.

Then we headed out into the neighborhood and just walked the street. And my gosh, Ladera Ranch is full of prettiness!

Gotta love posing shots ; ) (Sorry Gabriel, I couldn’t help myself!)

undefined

Bah, how cute are they?!

Love.

Evelyn looked exquisite, wouldn’t you agree?

undefined
undefined
undefined

Jesus workin’ it for the camera : )

undefined
undefined

Evelyn and Jesus, you guys were perfect! Thank you so much for modeling!!

undefined

And now for the tablescape that I took entirely too many photos of… A HUGE thank you to the marvelous Melanie Bittick for designing it for us!!!

undefined

The mushrooms? LOVED. And I don’t even like mushrooms.

undefined
undefined
undefined

I died over the giraffe napkin holder. So awesome.

undefined

Everything just went together perfectly!

Not gonna lie, my stomach might have grumbled a little when I read the menu… I’d totally be down for a twice-baked purple potato!

undefined
undefined
undefined
undefined

Just sooo pretty. Thank you again Melanie!

undefined

To the other amazing women who attended, Emily, Jodi, Michelle, Katie, and Shanna, thank you for all the great conversation, honesty, and encouragement! I’m so glad I got to know all of you : )

And to Gabriel and Carlie… saying thank you seems insufficient for all that you guys have done. All the time, hard work, and passion you put into this workshop. All the honest advice and the strong desire to help us succeed. And most of all, for choosing me to be a part of it. I just hope that someday I can influence people the way you have and will continue to do : ) THANK YOU!!

Friday Fun Facts

As I sat down to write this post, I realized I never did a Friday Fun Facts post for May. I KNOW. I’m sorry. Mega choke on my part. I won’t let it happen again. But speaking of which, can you believe it’s already June?! I feel like I blinked and suddenly the year is half over. Cuhrazy. Anyways. This month’s Friday Fun Facts!

1. In general, chocolate cereals do not taste much like chocolate. (i.e. Chocolate Frosted Mini Wheats, or Chocolate Honey Combs). Kind of a let down. Although I will say Special K Chocolatey Delight does a pretty good job.
2. This Peel-Off Face Mask is AWESOME. Your face totally feels soft and smooth after. And, let’s be real. What’s not to love about peeling it off?
3. Bowling shoes are sexy. Enough said.
4. It’s such a shame that, in general, the weight you lose when you’re sick (like with an awful stomach virus) doesn’t stay off very long. That’d be so convenient.
5. How great is it when you think it’s one day and it’s actually a day later?! Like when you think it’s Wednesday and then you realize it’s Thursday… The weekend just got that much closer.
6. Lotion sunscreen > Spray on sunscreen. Always.
7. 5 Hour Energy Drinks? Yeah, they really work.
8. Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is SO important. My friend sent me this link the other day and I thought I’d share it, because I couldn’t say it better myself. (And please, take this from a fellow bride as opposed to a wedding photographer. After all, I was a bride first, and every girl deserves the best photographer for her wedding, whether it has anything to do with me or not.
9. I’ve never understood why chefs wear white aprons. Cooking in white clothes is just asking for a spill, if you ask me.
10. You’re never too old for the zoo!

I had the opportunity to tag along with my cousin and her first grade class when they went to the Hogle Zoo this week. I was soooo excited. I don’t think I’ve been to a zoo in at least 10 years, and I forgot how awesome it is to see these animals up close! I think the only difference between now and then, though, is that now I feel a little sad seeing the animals in a cage instead of where they belong… But then I see how thrilled all the kids are, and I know it’s a great place for them to learn, and I know that the animals are well looked after… Well, anyways. Sorry to get all deep. It’s the weekend! Enjoy some of my pictures from the zoo : )

This guy had the longest tongue I’ve ever seen. Hilarious.

I think this could be Zuka’s long lost cousin. Haha.

I looooove elephants!

The little baby still looked like an old man because it was so wrinkled. Presh.

Butt shot.

In case you were wondering, yes. The cotton candy was delicious.

I wanted to ride the carousel, but settled for the train instead.

All the tigers were asleep when we got to them. I was really bummed, but I couldn’t blame them. I mean, naps are the best.

We finished the afternoon with the bird show!

This guy was my favorite. He bobbed his head up and down and squawked like mad. I was dying laughing.

These parrots were so bright. It was beautiful.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

You got some great zoo pictures!

Lauren - June 6, 2011 - 9:31 am

Love all the zoo photos and it’s so true about wedding photography! That’s what we undoubtedly spent the most on aside from the venue – it’s a must!

Carissa - June 6, 2011 - 12:43 pm

@David Thanks!

@Lauren Carissa Uribe likes this : )

The Golden State

I only had a morning and afternoon to hang out in SoCal before my evening flight, but it was enough. Now I get why people love living here.

U2

Boy oh boy do I have some fun things to blog this month! To give you a snippet, I headed to California last week for a workshop put on by Gabriel Ryan Photographers. I came home with wicked amounts of knowledge, pretty pictures, and an awful sunburn. (Not from the workshop, from a day at the beach after. Apparently I suck at putting on sunscreen.) But it was TOTALLY worth it! Can’t wait to share some of the photos : ) (Don’t worry, though, I won’t be blogging the sunburn. For everyone’s sake.) That’s all I’ll say for now. You’ll just have to keep checking back for more ; )

Until then, I thought I’d post a few pictures of the U2 concert in Salt Lake. I was given an opportunity to go (THANK YOU JOHN!!!), and it was utterly amazing. AMAZING I tell you. I’ve never been to a concert like it. (Although that’s not saying much, considering the small collection of concerts I’ve been to is mostly made up of N’sync.) Seriously though, it was phenomenal. If you ever have the chance to go to a U2 concert, do it. You won’t regret it. Enjoy a few snapshots of the show!

For any photo nerds like me, these were all taken with my 24-70mm. I was nervous they wouldn’t let me bring my 70-200mm into the stadium, but now I totally regret not bringing it. They hardly checked my purse. Dang it. I still got some decent ones, though. I think : )

That screen was seriously massive. Pictures don’t do it justice.
