Music Monday

Has the weather been weird all over lately? Or is it just me? Either way, it started to absolutely POUR down rain yesterday. For the entire afternoon and evening. In Park City. In the middle of July.

That doesn’t happen.

And it was cold, too. Cold enough that the fire was started, blankets were pulled out, and hot chocolate was made. Kind of made me excited for winter, and twinkling lights, and the smell of pine, and Christmas music… Sick, I know.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. After all, it IS still July. Right smack dab in the middle of summer. Which calls for some summer music! This song is exactly that in my book. A pretty, soft, and relaxing song. Perfect for a lazy afternoon laying in the shade of a big oak tree on a down blanket with a good thick book. Or taking a nap on freshly washed cotton sheets with the window open and a breeze lightly blowing the curtains. Both are acceptable. Whichever you prefer, I hope this song is summer for you, too. Enjoy Hazy by Rosi Golan (ft. William Fitzimmons).

Happy Summer : )

The Man of the House

We’ve been best friends since I was 8. I’ve hugged him while I’ve cried and he’s made me laugh so hard there were tears. He knows all my secrets. He’s seen me at my best, and he’s seen me at my worst. Yet he never fails to greet me like I’m the best thing that happened to his day, tail wagging exuberantly and smile so big it takes up half his face. I’ll be honest, he might get a little bit of special treatment.

He gets to ride in my lap when we all go to the park. He always gets a scrap from the table. He doesn’t get scolded if he barks. He gets whatever toy he wants. (And this isn’t my doing, Zuka will give it up if he goes for it!) He’s never blamed for anything. (Well, unless he poops in the house. Which does happen occasionally. After all, he is pretty stinking old.) He even gets to sleep in the bed sometimes (much to Jake’s chagrin).

Zuka might think he’s in charge, but Frisky and I both know who the real man of the house is. I mean, he wears a blue bandana. If that’s not reason enough, I don’t know what is.

Park City Anytime: The Medina Family

This week I had the honor of capturing the Medina family. The whole family came to visit for the 4th of July, and they wanted a big group picture to commemorate it. And while I’m all for family portraits, I’m more for family moments, the stuff going on between the posed pictures and group shots. Enjoy a couple of their moments.

Happy Birthday America

Last night I went to a dear friend’s home for a bbq and fireworks. In Park City they always do fireworks on the 3rd (at The Canyons) and the 4th (at Park City Mountain). I’ve never been opposed to two days of celebration. I mean, what’s not to love about twice the glittering fireworks, and more importantly, an awesome abundance of food?!

Really though, I feel extremely blessed to live in this magnificent country. And I see no reason not t0 celebrate it for two days. I’m very proud and privileged to be an American. Happy 4th of July, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful day.

And happy birthday, America.

A Learning Process

I think everyone can agree that we never stop learning. It’s a continuous process, as it should be, and we only learn as much as we are willing to put into our work. While it can be a pain in the butt at times, it’s completely worth it.

(So, I’d be lying if I said I came up with the idea for this post on my own, and I need to give credit where credit is due. I actually kind of borrowed it from the lovely Emily of Gem Photo. I had the opportunity to spend the day with her at the BUILD Workshop, and let me just say, her photography is appropriately named. She is a gem.)

When I saw Emily’s post about the craft of color and light, it totally inspired me. To be better. To take my time. To focus on the mechanics. And yes, to practice even when it’s a pain in the butt.

Specifically, nailing the shot SOOC, or straight out of camera. Meaning, when I take the picture, it looks exactly how I want it to, how I see it, right when I take it. No post processing necessary. Although I love what some subtle editing can do, my ultimate goal is to create images that are organic and timeless, and in my mind the best way to do that is capture a moment as it is, the first time. Not have fix it later. Because when you succeed, when you freeze a moment in time like that, everything about it real and raw in its colors and imperfections and emotion, it’s beautiful. Simply beautiful. And it’s something the best editing in the world can’t recreate.

Here are a few photos from my recent endeavors. These were all taken with a Canon 5DMII and a 50mm lens. They are all completely SOOC, no editing done whatsoever. And a quick note about the white balance: Previously I had just left it on auto and that was that. But recently I’ve been trying incorporate it into my settings, and change it according to how I want the photo look, which is why I included it in the info below.

ISO 250    .      f/1.8     .     1/640 shutter speed      .    white balance set at 6500 k for cloudy

If anyone has questions about anything, please don’t be afraid to ask! While I clearly don’t know everything, I’ve learned so much from following other photography blogs, and if I can give back and be of some help to anyone, I’m more than happy to offer my opinion : ) Happy Monday!

P.S. Thanks to my wonderful friend Tori for snapping some new pictures for my blog header. I figured it was time for a few summer pictures : )
